4-6 large McIntosh or other tart, firm apples
1/2 C all-purpose flour
1/4 C dark brown sugar
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 pinch nutmeg
4 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Peel, core and thickly slice the apples. Turn them into a deep, buttered 2-quart baking dish. The apples should be at least 2 1/2 inches deep int eh pn; add more if necessary.
In the bowl of a mixer using the paddle attachment, stir together the flour, sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Mix in the butter to make a crumbly, sandy mixture. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.
Bake for 30 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is browned. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
